Fast Facts - Stingless Bees for crop Pollination - page 221

Stingless bees boast a number of traits that make them valuable crop pollinators.

Stingless bees possess some advantages over honey bees, but also a number of shortcomings for farm use.

Six crops
are promising targets for pollination by stingless bees in Australia, macadamia, mango, avocado, lychee, blueberry and strawberry.

Using stingless bees for crop pollination is new, but useful guidelines are provided here.

Hives can be moved onto farms just for the flowering season or can remain there for the whole year.

Hives can be strategically placed to maximise their effectiveness, take advantage of the best microclimate, minimise fighting, and minimise exposure to insecticides.
